- While this tank looks nice, especially with the acrylic sides, here are some drawbacks that make me regret buying it:

#1. Small fish (ghost shrimp, cherry barbs, small tetras) end up getting sucked through the spillway because the grid is so wide. It doesn't hurt the fish, or shrimp, but I have to fish somebody out every single evening so they aren't stranded in the tiny compartment with the heater and the dirtiest of the water (as it is where the water goes on its way to be recycled).

#2. 1/3 of the actual tank is taken up by a separate compartment where the filtration system is contained. So while "50 gallons" is advertised, it is misleading because the fish only have 33 gallon of living space. Cutting out 1/3 of the tank makes for a very narrow depth since the tank is so high. It looks very cramped from front to back.

#3 The tank is not "live-plant" friendly, as any free-floating plant materials gets caught in the spillway and must eventually be removed so it doesn't prevent flow.

#4 The top of the tank is separated by a large acrylic divider (not removable) so that you can't maneuver a net easily at all if you need to catch a fish. You cannot sweep the net across the length of the tank, you can only move the net freely on one side or the other of this divider, so of course the fish swim to the side you aren't on.

I have called the company to ask if they make a part to go over the spillway so small fish can't get through, and they seemed clueless about this problem. The CSR first said that any fish who goes through the spillway must be sick. That's not true at all. I have been fishing healthy fish and shrimp from out of the back compartment for months now. So far, there is no solution.

If you get this tank, get larger fish (but not more than 33 gallons can comfortably house), forget live plants, and forget about ever retrieving a fish if necessary.
